Chapter Twenty-Three
“Long time no see.” Bruce put the toothpick in his mouth and chewed it before moving the rope to let Alexander into Eddie’s.
The back of Alexander’s neck tingled, and his pulse raced. He hadn’t noticed it before, but something was telling him Bruce’s greeting hid a threat and a shit-ton of arrogance.
He glared at the bouncer as he walked by. Let him try something.
Alexander passed the bar and grabbed a handful of bar mix before taking a seat at a nearby table. He wondered if Pete was at their usual spot next to the stage or if he’d been setting up camp somewhere else. It had been a long time since he’d hung out with his friend.
Since bailing Cheyenne out of jail last week, Alexander hadn’t been in the mood for partying, and he sure as shit wasn’t in the mood to be at Eddie’s. It felt disloyal to be at the club, considering she’d fired Cheyenne, but Pete had shown up at his place and pestered him into submission.
He looked at his watch, hoping the set would end soon. The discordant music threatened to make his ears bleed. He wished he’d thought to bring earplugs.
Considering the empty tables and the disinterested looks on the faces of people milling about, he wasn’t the only one unhappy with the new band. Hearing them gave him the courage to confront Eddie. He planned to point out the damage bad music did to her business and persuade her to give Cheyenne his job back.
He cringed when the lead guitarist played another off-key riff.
“Can I get you a drink? Haven’t seen you much lately. Are you by yourself tonight?”
He looked up to see Ann smiling. “Hey, sweetness. I’m sorry I haven’t been around in a while.”
“No worries. We’re good. Let me get you that drink. The usual?”
Nursing his bourbon on the rocks, Alexander searched the crowd for Eddie while watching the other patrons suffer through the show. His newly enhanced vision made quick work of scanning the dark club. He nodded in greeting when Pete made his way to the table.
“Damn, this place has gone downhill,” Pete said. He pulled out a chair, turned it around and straddled the seat. “What’s it been? A month? Who would have thought that little dude could make this much difference?”
Alexander polished off the bourbon and slammed the glass to the table. “I told you his music was worth coming to this dive to hear.”
“What you callin’ a dive, college boy?” Eddie’s voice seemed to come out of nowhere.
Alexander jumped to his feet, surprised to find the older woman standing behind him. “I didn’t mean anything. Not about the bar. I’m sorry. I just meant, without Cheyenne…”
“Sit down,” she commanded, joining him at the table. “I know what kind of place this is.” She glanced over her shoulder at the band. “He may be my nephew, but that band is ruining me. We gotta talk.” Eddie leaned forward and poked Pete between the eyes. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
“Ouch.
